About

A short walk from the Bankhead Theater, Sauced BBQ & Spirits fills Suite 120 at 2300 First Street in downtown Livermore. This dining room is where the company started in 2012. Cousins Barrett Gomes, who grew up in Pleasanton, and Brenden Scanlan, an Atlanta native, opened it without any earlier restaurant experience, and the group has since grown to seven locations stretching from Southern California to Sacramento while staying company-run rather than franchised. The chamber's records name Courtney Gomes as director.

Smoke, sides and a long bar

Meat here comes off an Ole Hickory smoker. Burnt ends and pulled pork are the dishes local write-ups mention first, followed by mashups that cross Southern barbecue with California habits. One that comes up often is Bumpkins, egg rolls stuffed with brisket and poblano.

The second half of the name refers to a back bar holding more than 250 bourbons, whiskeys, scotches and ryes, along with a line of Sauced beers brewed locally. A weekly calendar of trivia, live music and bingo turns many evenings into something closer to a night out than a quick dinner.

Planning a visit

Opening hours were not confirmed for this page, so check the restaurant's website or phone ahead before heading over. Ask whether the night you have in mind has trivia or a band, since that changes the noise level and how quickly tables turn. For a birthday or an office group, call about a reservation or a larger table, and ask about takeout if you would rather eat at home. Diners with allergies should ask what goes into the rubs, sauces and sides, because barbecue kitchens often use dairy, gluten and sugar where guests do not expect them. Downtown parking can mean a short stroll, so leave a few minutes spare.

Who makes the trip

The First Street restaurant draws from all over the Tri-Valley, with Pleasanton and Dublin close by and Sunol a short drive away. Diners also come from Castro Valley, Hayward, Fremont and Union City elsewhere in Alameda County, and theatre audiences can walk over before or after a show at the Bankhead.

Common questions

Typical for this type of business
Do I need a reservation at a barbecue restaurant like this?

Walk-ins are common at casual barbecue spots, but weekend evenings and entertainment nights fill up. Call ahead or check the restaurant's website for booking options, especially for a group.

Can a group book a larger table or private event?

Many full-service restaurants with a bar take group bookings or set aside a section for parties. Ask the restaurant directly about minimums, set menus and how far ahead to book.

Is takeout available?

Barbecue travels well, and most restaurants of this type offer takeout or delivery through apps. Confirm current options and ordering cut-off times with the restaurant before you plan around them.

How do barbecue kitchens handle allergies?

Rubs, sauces and sides often contain dairy, gluten, sugar or nuts, and smokers are shared across meats. Tell your server about any allergy and ask which dishes can be adjusted.

Before you hire

  • Check current opening hours on the restaurant's website or by phone; they are not confirmed here.
  • Ask whether your evening has trivia, live music or bingo if you want a quieter or livelier table.
  • Call ahead for birthdays, office groups or other large parties.
  • Raise allergies or dietary limits before ordering; rubs and sauces often hide dairy and gluten.
  • Allow time to find downtown parking and walk to First Street.
