Published sources only
Every fact in a profile comes from a published source we can link: official records, government websites, election filings and results, and news reporting.
Both sides, by name
Praise and criticism appear side by side, and each view is attributed to a named person: an article's author, an official, or a community member quoted in published reporting. We do not quote anonymous comments.
Short quotes, checked
Direct quotes are short and checked word for word against the source. Most views are paraphrased and attributed.
No endorsements
SFBAYHCC does not endorse candidates in these pages. Every candidate in a contest gets the same fields, in the order the official source lists them.
Dated updates
Changes are logged with the date, newest first, at the top of each page: new filings, results, appointments and news.
Party endorsements
A tag shows a candidate a ballot-qualified political party has officially endorsed: the state party or a county central committee of the Democratic, Republican, Green, Libertarian, Peace and Freedom or American Independent party, never a club, caucus or other group. Each tag links the party's own list (for Congress, the Legislature, statewide offices and the Board of Equalization, the list parties also file with each county under Elections Code 13302(b)). In California's top-two system the party shown next to a candidate's name on the ballot is the candidate's own preference, which by law is not a nomination or an endorsement. When a party chose not to endorse in a race, the contest says so. The lists are checked every night.
Campaign money
Contributions come from each campaign's own sworn reports, and every figure links to the report it comes from. State and local candidates: Form 460 line 5, total contributions received (which includes loans), added up over every report the campaign has filed for this race, from Cal-Access (Secretary of State), the San Francisco Ethics Commission or the city or county filing system. Federal candidates: the FEC's total contributions for 2025 and 2026. Each figure runs through the date shown; two figures compare fairly only through the same date. Contributions of $1,000 or more reported within 24 hours after that date are not yet included. N/A means there is no figure we can cite, and the reason is given: a short form for a campaign under $2,000, no report filed yet, a paper filing, or statements not available online. A figure entered by hand from a filed report says so. The figures are read from the filings every night.
