Alma Hernandez

Mayor of Suisun City

On the Nov. 3 ballot

Alma Hernandez has been mayor of Suisun City since December 2022, after serving on the City Council. She is seeking re-election on November 3, 2026, in a five-candidate race that includes Councilmember Amit Pal.

Background

Alma Hernandez grew up in Suisun City. Her 2026 ballot statement gives her age as 43 and her occupation as project manager, and cites more than 20 years of community leadership, a business background and a recent fellowship with Harvard and the Mayors' Institute on City Design. Before joining the City Council she served on the city's Economic Pandemic Impact Community Advisory Committee and its Environment and Climate Committee, and she takes part in the volunteer Suisun City Community Clean Team. She also represents the city on the Suisun-Solano Water Authority and the Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District.

In office

Hernandez was on the City Council, in a term running to 2024, when Mayor Lori Wilson resigned in 2022 after winning a special election to the Assembly. The council could not agree on an appointee, so the vacancy went to the November 2022 ballot. Hernandez won the full four-year term with 63.01 percent of the vote over James Berg and was sworn in on December 6, 2022. In January 2023 the council appointed Amit Pal to her former seat; she said it needed someone with his long experience in city government.

In June 2025, as the council moved to study annexing land owned by California Forever, she called the prospect of new jobs and housing a "generational opportunity that will most likely never come again." The council approved a reimbursement agreement with the company 3-1, with Councilmember Princess Washington voting no. In August 2025 organizers served recall papers on all five council members. Organizer James Berg told CBS Sacramento the council was being "walked all over by city staff," and resident Brent Finger, who helped lead the effort, said the city was going backward on public safety and homelessness. Hernandez said, "I believe strongly that we have a better pathway forward than a recall election," and warned that a special election could cost nearly half a million dollars.

On the ballot

Hernandez is seeking re-election on November 3, 2026, with the ballot designation Incumbent. The other candidates are Chauncey Banks, Michael Jefferson, Lilia Dardon and Councilmember Amit Pal. KQED reports she would keep exploring annexation with public input, while unsure the expansion is feasible or would fix a structural deficit of more than a decade. It lists endorsements from Assemblymember Lori Wilson, the Fairfield-Suisun Chamber of Commerce, the North Coast States Carpenters Union, the Solano County Democratic Central Committee and the Suisun City Police Officers Association.
