Chaparral House
A 49-bed non-profit nursing home on Allston Way in West Berkeley, open since 1978 beside Strawberry Creek.
Acerca de
At 1309 Allston Way in West Berkeley, Strawberry Creek comes out of its culvert and runs open through the back yard of Chaparral House, a non-profit skilled nursing community on land the founders chose beside the creek. The state health facilities department (HCAI) lists it as an open Skilled Nursing Facility with 49 beds at this address, and the organisation's own website carries the same street and phone number.
Care on site
Chaparral House says it keeps nurses and nursing assistants on duty around the clock, with medications given by a nurse according to each resident's physician orders. Daily help with bathing, dressing and the other routines of the day falls under what it calls restorative and supportive care, and residents can stay for a short recovery period or live there long term. An activities calendar fills the week, and families who want to see the place are asked to book a tour.
The history is local. Marion and Wally Johnson set up the Chaparral Foundation in 1971 after someone in their own family needed care; ground was broken on Valentine's Day 1977 and the doors opened on November 1, 1978. The home moved to a higher level of care in 1996.
Planning a move or a short stay
Placement usually starts with a call to admissions and a tour. Bring the resident's medication list, recent hospital discharge papers if there are any, insurance and Medi-Cal or Medicare details, and the name of the physician who will write orders. Ask how many beds are open, how private and shared rooms are assigned, how care plans are reviewed with families, and which visiting hours apply. The HCAI facility page and the California Department of Public Health inspection records are both free to read before you decide.
Who comes here
Most families are from Berkeley and neighbouring Albany, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont, with others arriving from Alameda, San Leandro and Castro Valley farther down Alameda County. Downtown Berkeley BART is a short bus ride to the east.

Servicios
VerificadoThe facility states that licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants are on duty 24 hours a day, so residents who need skilled nursing attention at night have staff in the building.
A licensed nurse gives each resident's medications according to the physician's orders, keeping dosing, timing and changes under nursing supervision rather than leaving them to the resident or family.
Hands-on help with bathing, dressing and the other routines of daily living, aimed at keeping residents as capable and comfortable as their health allows during their stay.
Residence for someone recovering for a limited period after an illness or hospital stay, and for residents who need skilled nursing care as their permanent home.
A monthly activities calendar that gives residents organised things to do through the week, published so that families can see what is planned before they visit.
Families and prospective residents can arrange a visit to see the rooms, the grounds along Strawberry Creek and the daily routine before making a placement decision.

Preguntas frecuentes
Típico de este tipo de negocioWhat is the difference between a skilled nursing facility and assisted living?
A skilled nursing facility has nurses on duty at all hours and cares for people who need medical attention, medication management and hands-on help. Assisted living suits people who are largely independent and need lighter support with daily tasks.
How do I check a nursing home's inspection history in California?
The California Department of Public Health publishes inspection and complaint findings for every skilled nursing facility, and HCAI lists each facility's bed count and status. Federal Care Compare also carries inspection summaries. All three are free to search by name.
What should I bring to an admissions meeting?
A current medication list, hospital discharge summary if the move follows a hospital stay, insurance cards, Medicare or Medi-Cal details, advance directive or power of attorney papers, and contact details for the resident's physician.
Can someone stay for a short recovery and then go home?
Many skilled nursing homes take residents for a short stay after surgery or illness as well as long-term residents. Ask admissions whether a short stay is available now, how discharge planning works and what the stay is expected to cost under your coverage.
