The Screen Shop
Wood screens still made in-house on Hamline Street, plus Marvin and Milgard windows for San Jose homes.
Acerca de
Wood screens and screen doors are still cut and assembled in the back of The Screen Shop at 601 Hamline Street in San Jose, the same trade the business began with. According to the company's own history, Joe Salamida started out in 1945 building wood screens in a neighbor's basement. The showroom on Hamline, in the 95110 zip code northwest of downtown, is now run by later generations of the Salamida family, and the chamber's records list John Salamida as president.
Windows, doors and screens
The company's site lists replacement windows and patio doors from Marvin and Milgard, aluminum window products and aluminum awnings, alongside the screens it makes in its own shop. It offers in-home estimates and will also do plan take-offs, working from drawings to price the windows and doors for a remodel, an addition or a backyard ADU before construction starts.
That last service matters for anyone building. Window counts and rough-opening sizes drive a surprising share of a project's budget and schedule, and a take-off gives a contractor or owner-builder a number to plan around.
Planning a window or screen job
Have rough measurements and a few photos of the existing frames ready when you call, and say whether the house is stucco, wood siding or something else, since that changes how replacement units are fitted. Ask for the estimate in writing, with the brand, series, glass package and installation broken out as separate lines. The site does not show a contractor number, so ask for it and look it up on the CSLB website before signing for installed work. Custom screens and special-order windows take time to build or ship; ask for an honest lead time, especially going into summer.
Around San Jose
From Hamline Street the shop is a short drive to Santa Clara, Campbell, Milpitas and Sunnyvale, and to the West Valley towns of Cupertino, Saratoga and Los Gatos. Homeowners across Santa Clara County bring torn screens in for repair or book the in-home visit for larger jobs.
The showroom keeps weekday hours from 8:30 to 5 and opens Saturday mornings until 1. Call 408-295-7384 to set up an estimate.

Preguntas frecuentes
Típico de este tipo de negocioDo I need to replace the whole window or just the screen?
A torn or bent screen can usually be rescreened or rebuilt without touching the window. Replacement makes sense when frames rot, glass fogs between panes or the sash will not open. Bring the screen in or send photos and ask which option fits.
What is a plan take-off?
A take-off is a count and price of every window and door shown on a set of plans. It helps an owner or contractor budget a remodel, addition or ADU and order long-lead items early, before the rough openings are framed.
How long do replacement windows take to arrive?
Lead times depend on the brand, series and any custom sizes or colours, and they lengthen in spring and summer. Ask for the expected lead time in writing when you approve the estimate, and plan related stucco or trim work around it.
Who handles the permit for window replacement?
In San Jose many window replacements need a building permit and must meet energy-code rules for glass. Ask whether the installer pulls the permit and books the inspection or whether that falls to you, and get the answer written into the contract.
