Acerca de

Proyecto Diaz Coffee began roasting on Davis Street in San Leandro in 2014 and has since moved its roastery, which it calls the Coffee Compound, to 34th Street in Oakland. The company is built on four generations of the Diaz family's coffee farming in Oaxaca, Mexico, and describes its purpose as rebuilding farms and legacies: it roasts small-lot Latin American coffees, including beans from the founders' grandfather's farm, and returns part of what it earns to the growers. Fernando Diaz is the contact in chamber records; the San Leandro address on file is the company's former location.

Coffee, cafes and wholesale

Three things come out of the roastery. First, retail bags of single-origin and blended coffee, sold online and at its two Oakland cafes in West Oakland and Uptown. Second, the cafes themselves, which serve espresso drinks and drip alongside the beans. Third, a wholesale program that supplies restaurants, offices and other cafes and that the company actively recruits partners for.

The roasting focus is Latin American origins, Mexico foremost, sourced through relationships with growers rather than the open commodity market.

Buying from the roaster

Retail customers can order through the website or visit either Oakland cafe; ask about roast dates, since a roaster of this size usually ships within days of roasting. Cafes and restaurants interested in wholesale should be ready to discuss weekly volume, equipment on hand and whether they need training for staff, and should ask about minimum orders, delivery days in the East Bay, pricing tiers and whether espresso machine service or loaner grinders are part of the arrangement. Offices can ask about recurring deliveries. Check the website for current cafe hours before making the trip, as they change seasonally.

East Bay footprint

The company started in San Leandro and now operates in Oakland, and its wholesale deliveries and customers span San Lorenzo, Hayward, Castro Valley, Alameda, Union City and Fremont. The Davis Street site sits by the San Leandro BART station and Interstate 880; the current roastery is in West Oakland.

Chamber records list 650-834-3171; the company's site directs inquiries to its email and web forms, so proyectodiazcoffee.com is the surer route.

Preguntas frecuentes

Típico de este tipo de negocio
How fresh is coffee from a small roaster?

Small roasters usually roast to order and ship or shelve within days, and print the roast date on the bag. Ask for it, and plan to use beans within a few weeks of roasting for the best cup, keeping them sealed and away from heat.

What do I need to become a wholesale account?

Expect to discuss expected weekly volume, your brewing equipment, delivery address and whether staff need training. Ask about minimum orders, pricing tiers, delivery days and whether equipment support is offered.

What does direct-relationship sourcing mean?

It means the roaster buys from specific farms or cooperatives it knows, often paying above commodity prices, rather than through anonymous importers. Ask which origins the roaster works with directly and how the relationship benefits growers.

Can I visit the roastery?

Roasting facilities are working spaces and are not always open to the public; the cafes are the usual place to taste and buy. Check the website or ask by email whether tours or cuppings are scheduled.

Antes de contratar

  • Ask for the roast date and the origin of the beans you are buying.
  • For wholesale, get minimum order, pricing tiers and delivery days in writing.
  • Confirm which location you are visiting; the roastery and cafes are in Oakland, not San Leandro.
  • Ask whether staff training or equipment support comes with a wholesale account.
  • Check the website for current cafe hours before making the trip.
