Acerca de

A parent who has been told to "wait and see" about a child's speech often wants a second opinion sooner than that. Speech Goals is a pediatric speech-language pathology and occupational therapy practice whose main office is at 1265 Mission Road in South San Francisco, a short way along Mission Road from the South San Francisco BART station. The practice sums itself up as "speech goals | ot goals | learning together" and says its mission is helping children find their voice. Marjorie Olguin runs operations.

Speech and occupational therapy for children

The practice states two lines of work: speech-language pathology for children, and occupational therapy for children. In practice that means evaluation and therapy for the things families notice first, such as late talking, unclear articulation and difficulty understanding or using language, and the fine-motor, sensory and daily-living skills that occupational therapists work on. Sessions are one-to-one with a therapist and planned around goals written for the individual child.

Speech Goals lists branch clinics in San Mateo, Redwood City and the Mission District of San Francisco, plus two in Reno, Nevada, so a family can be seen at whichever office is closest. A single phone line routes callers to the right office, and the practice also accepts text messages.

Your first appointment

Before the first visit, gather anything a pediatrician, school or previous therapist has written about the child, and note which words or sounds cause trouble at home. Ask how the evaluation is structured, how long it takes, and whether the therapist who evaluates will also treat. Ask about insurance: which plans are accepted, whether a referral is needed, and what a self-pay session costs. If Spanish is the language of the home, say so when booking so the practice can match the right therapist. Waiting lists for pediatric therapy are common across the Peninsula, so call before you need a slot rather than after.

Clinics and coverage

From the South San Francisco office the practice serves San Bruno, Daly City, Colma, Brisbane, Millbrae and Pacifica, and the Mission District clinic covers San Francisco proper. Families elsewhere in San Mateo County usually use the San Mateo or Redwood City branch.

Call 650-583-3797 to reach any office. The main office is open weekdays from nine in the morning until six.

Preguntas frecuentes

Típico de este tipo de negocio
At what age should a child be evaluated for a speech delay?

There is no minimum age. Many practices evaluate toddlers under two when parents or a pediatrician notice few words, limited gestures or trouble being understood. Earlier evaluation gives more options, so ask for an assessment rather than waiting for a milestone to pass.

Do I need a referral from a pediatrician?

It depends on your insurance plan rather than the practice. Some plans require a referral or prior authorisation for therapy; others allow you to book directly. Ask the office which plans it accepts and whether it handles the authorisation paperwork.

What is the difference between speech therapy and occupational therapy?

Speech-language pathologists work on communication: sounds, words, understanding and social language. Occupational therapists work on the physical and sensory skills a child needs for daily life, such as handwriting, feeding and self-care. Some children benefit from both.

How often are sessions, and for how long?

Most pediatric therapy runs once or twice a week in sessions of thirty to sixty minutes, with progress reviewed against written goals every few months. Ask the practice what it recommends for your child after the evaluation and how it measures progress.

Antes de contratar

  • Ask which therapist will evaluate your child and whether the same person will provide the therapy.
  • Confirm which insurance plans are accepted and whether a referral or prior authorisation is needed.
  • Bring prior reports from a pediatrician, school or previous therapist to the first visit.
  • Ask how goals are written, how often progress is reviewed, and how parents are involved between sessions.
  • If your family speaks Spanish at home, ask for a therapist who can work in both languages.
