Acerca de

Not Just Quiltz sits on Niles Boulevard in Fremont's historic Niles district, the old railroad and silent-film town at the mouth of Niles Canyon. Nancy Cerna owns the shop and does its quilting, design and teaching work, while her partner in the business handles the business side and its involvement with the Quilts of Honor programme for veterans.

Inside the shop

The shop offers custom quilts made to order, long-arm quilting for tops that customers have pieced themselves, and embroidery. On the retail side it stocks batiks, quilting supplies and notions, and since 2017 it has been building a collection of Aboriginal fabrics from Australian Indigenous designers that it describes as one of the largest in the country.

Fremont quilters and sewists come in for backing and batting, for help finishing a top before a deadline, and for prints they cannot find at a chain fabric store. The Aboriginal collection draws buyers from well outside the East Bay.

Bringing in a project

For long-arm quilting, bring the pieced top pressed and squared, with backing at least eight inches larger on each side, and ask about batting choices, edge-to-edge versus custom quilting, and the turnaround, which stretches before holidays and quilt-show season. For a commissioned quilt, bring photos, measurements and a sense of colour, and ask for a written quote. For embroidery, bring the garment or fabric and the artwork file. Check the day of the week before a special trip, since the shop is not open every day.

Finding Niles

Niles is the northern corner of Fremont, near Union City and Hayward, and the shop is minutes from Newark, Milpitas, San Leandro, Sunol and Pleasanton via Mission Boulevard and Niles Canyon Road.

Preguntas frecuentes

Típico de este tipo de negocio
How should I prepare a quilt top for long-arm quilting?

Press the top and backing, trim loose threads, square the edges and make sure the backing and batting are several inches larger than the top on every side. Ask the shop about its preferred margins and whether it sells backing and batting by the yard.

How long does long-arm quilting take?

Turnaround depends on the queue and whether you choose edge-to-edge or custom quilting; weeks is typical and longer before holidays or show deadlines. Ask for a date when you drop off the top and whether rush work is possible.

What is the difference between edge-to-edge and custom quilting?

Edge-to-edge repeats one pattern across the whole quilt and costs less; custom quilting changes the design block by block to follow the piecing and takes far longer. Ask to see samples of both before deciding.

Can I order a quilt as a gift?

Custom quilts are made to order; bring measurements, colour ideas or photographs and a deadline, and ask for a written quote covering fabric, piecing, quilting and binding. Allow extra time for gift dates.

Antes de contratar

  • Ask for a written quote for custom quilts or long-arm work before leaving your top.
  • Confirm the turnaround date, especially before holidays and quilt shows.
  • Bring the pieced top pressed and squared, with backing and batting oversize on each side.
  • Check opening days before a long drive; the shop is not open every day.
  • Ask whether batting, backing and thread are included in the quilting price.
